It is a true claim that doctors have performed a procedure that has given hope to millions of suffering patients around the world. For instance, a decade blind Canadian woman named Gail Lane now has a chance to restore her sight because of a novel surgical technique which is termed as “tooth-in-eye” surgery. The specific eye lens was implanted in the eye socket during a Mount St. Joseph Hospital in Vancouver. This was the first instance of its kind in Canada. According to other doctors, this method is likely to be successful for patients who have damage to the outer membrane of the eyeball but possess healthy retina and optic nerve.
What is the entire process?
As Dr. Greg Moloney states, this surgery is so uncommon that even a lot of eye surgeons are not aware of it. At this stage, the patient’s tooth is transformed into a lens, which is then implanted into the eye along with a lens. This in turn enables new cornea formation.
The procedure is accomplished in a total of 2 stages. In the second stage, one of Lane’s teeth was extracted, refined and a plastic lens was placed inside it. Afterwards, the Augmented tooth was embedded into the subcutaneous tissue of his cheek for a period of 3 months for tissue integration. Dr. Moloney states that this aspect is extremely crucial because the tooth is devoid of the normal connective tissue that would allow for direct implantation into the eye. During this period, the upper part of Lane's eye was excised and a skin graft from his cheek was sutured to the raw surface allowing it to heal.
This surgery is beneficial solely for
patients who have been left with severe corneal blindness, especially due to autoimmune diseases, chemical burns or other forms of trauma. On the other hand, the retina and optic nerve of the patient must be intact.
The hospital reported the details surrounding this case of new surgery. X stated, I have not seen myself for a decade. If I'm able to see now, it would mark a period of great joy for myself.
