Suspense crime, Digital Desk : The head of Bangladesh’s interim government, Muhammad Yunus, has described the country’s current political climate as a “war-like situation” after the Awami League has been banned. Yunus, through Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, warned of attempts, both internally and externally, to destabilize the country.
“After the banning of Awami League, an exacerbated war-like situation has emerged… The objective is to stifle our advancement and lead us to a collapse,” Yunus was quoted saying in a Sunday night meeting.
Pledge to Hold Fair Elections by June 2026
Yunus assured political leaders of his intention to provide them a transparent electoral process, ensuring that he would relinquish power by June 30, 2026.
“If I do not manage to conduct a fair election, I would have remorse,” Yunus stated, saying, “I will not remain in this post even a single day after June 30, 2026.”
As detailed by The Daily Star, Yunus held a meeting on May 25 with leaders of twenty political parties. He had separate meetings with leaders of BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and National Citizens Party (NCP).
Increased Political Tension from Opposing Parties
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party, spearheaded by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, is insisting on the parliamentary elections to be conducted in December 2025.
Simultaneously, the newly established National Citizens Party (NCP)—formed by the students who helped to depose former PM Sheikh Hasina—is advocating for reforms to take place prior to elections.
Some reports claim that Yunus may be in a position of having to resign due to the never-ending political turmoil.
Sheikh Hasina Charges Yunus of “Selling The Island”
The former Prime Minister and currently the head of the banned Awami League Hasina, accuses Muhammad Yunus on his new audio message of “selling the nation off to the US.”
She vehemently condemned the ban on her party as “unconstitutional,” linking it to an international conspiracy.
“Sheikh Hasina proclaimed, ‘My father did not relinquish St. Martin’s Island under US duress. Sheik Mujibur Rahman suffered for it. I will never concede the country just to sustain my rule.’”
