BJP has put forth Chandrabhan Paswan as their candidate for the Milkipur Bypoll Election taking place in Uttar Pradesh. The by election is likely to be won by either the BJP or Samajwadi Party led by Akhilesh Yadav. Rajput, Ajeet Prasad has been selected as the candidate by SP for the seat in Milkipur.
Once Prasad had been elected as MP for Faizabad Loksabha, the seat was reserved for him which had opened up by election for MMLA. During the elections the following candidate was up against him : Lallu Singh, as BJP MP for MMLA.
Owing to the fact, that the case had been pending in court, the election commission postponed the bypoll election that was to take place In November 2024. The bypoll is for the position of MP and is expected to take place soon.
Last time around when Mitrasen Yadav was in the running, the elections were conducted and the seat was won by the Samajiwadi Party. The election took place in 1998. Singh won the seat twice consecutively when he competed with Kumar Sangma and Smriti Irani in 2014 and 2019.
In June last year, the Samajwadi Party (SP) won 37 out of 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, however, the party's performance dwindled when it only managed to win two out of nine assembly seats in the November bypolls. The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) won the Phulpur, Ghaziabad, and Khair seats during the bypolls while the SP lost the Katehari and Kundarki seats.
Why do the BJP consider Milkipur to be strategically significant?
Milkipur seat would be very useful in countering the Pasis desertion narrative that is being floated by the opposition while at the same time it would restore the conception that the Pasis have not Le Azoed the party, as the Samajwadi party takes pride in winning over the Ayodhya Lok sabha seat.
