The cost of spirits in Uttarakhand has seen a significant jump starting today, April 1, 2026. Following the implementation of the state’s new excise policy for the current financial year, consumers will now have to pay more for their favorite brands. The government has authorized a 10% price hike per bottle, impacting both Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and country liquor across all districts from Dehradun to Nainital.
New Financial Year, New Rates
The price revision comes as the Uttarakhand Excise Department aims to meet its revenue targets for the 2026-27 fiscal year. With the new settlement of liquor vends completed, the revised rate lists have been prominently displayed at all authorized retail outlets. This move is expected to generate additional crores in revenue for the state exchequer, which the government plans to divert toward infrastructure and social welfare projects.
Impact Across All Categories
The 10% increase is uniform but translates to different amounts based on the category:
Premium Brands: High-end whiskey, vodka, and rum will see a steeper increase in absolute terms.
Beer and Wine: Prices of chilled beverages have also been adjusted upward just as the summer season begins.
Country Liquor: Even the most affordable segments have not been spared, with a proportionate increase to maintain the excise balance.
Cracking Down on Overcharging
With the new rates coming into force, the Excise Department has issued strict instructions to district officials to prevent overcharging. Teams have been formed to conduct surprise inspections at liquor shops to ensure that no vendor is selling bottles above the newly prescribed Maximum Retail Price (MRP). Citizens have been advised to check the official rate list before making a purchase and report any discrepancies to the toll-free helpline.
The Tourism Perspective
As a major tourist destination, the hike in liquor prices in Uttarakhand is also expected to reflect in the menus of hotels, bars, and restaurants. While the 10% increase is significant for local consumers, officials believe it remains competitive compared to neighboring states, ensuring that the "liquor tourism" revenue remains stable during the peak Char Dham Yatra and summer vacation season.
