The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) strongly condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The council stressed the need to capture and prosecute the masterminds, organizers, funders, and sponsors of such barbaric violence without any delay. In a press release on Friday, the UNSC stated that terrorism is still one of the most acute threats to international peace and security.
The Press Release and Global Outrage Reactions
As stated, the members of the United Nations Security Council paid deep tributes of sympathies to the families of the victims of the attacks and also to the governments of India and Nepal. They hoped for quick healing for all the other affected victims. The unfortunate incidence on 22 April 2023 resulted in 26 civilian fatalities and many others sustaining injuries.
In their statement, the UNSC members described terrorism as an act that has no justification in situations or any form of motivation. They stressed the need for immediate prosecution and called upon all governments to use relevant international laws and security council resolutions to actively respond.
Worldwide Coalition Against Terrorism
The UNSC pointed out that terrorist activities should be combated within the framework of the United Nations Charter and international law. This also includes international human rights law, law on refugees, and humanitarian law.
Circumstances of the Terrorist Attack and World Responses
The Pahalgam attack was largely focused at foreign visitors and caused massive anger in India and many other parts of the world. As a reaction, the Indian government took strong action against Pakistan for alleged support of the perpetrators across the border.
Indian actions included:
Dismissals of Pakistani military representatives.
Cancellation of the Indus Waters Treaty.
Closure of the Attari land crossing.
Pakistan's Response to Indian Actions
Pakistan reacted by:
Banning Indian-operated aircraft from using its airspace.
Ceasing all trade with India, even via third parties.
Denying India's claim regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, stating that any attempt to restrict the flow of water is “acts of war.”
