
President Donald Trump’s statements on Monday hint that Xi Jinping would be traveling to America soon, which would not be surprising, considering the trade tension between the two superpowers. The Chinese are now worried about the American tariffs.
“He’ll be coming in the not too distant future,” he said to reporters while discussing Xi during his visit to the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington.
No further comments were given by Trump.
Last week, the Wall Street Journal proclaimed that Washington and Beijing have began negotiations regarding a potential summit that is set to take place this June in America. Both leaders celebrate their birthdays in the latter half of the month.
Ever since returning to the White House this January, Trump has indiscriminately punished China, along with other America’s major trading partners, like Canada and Mexico, with tariffs while claiming that they are trade imbalances and the latter failing to contain deadful fentanyl.
Last week, the Chinese government requested a requirement “dialogue” discussion with the American government.
Earlier this month, Trump lifted a previously placed ten percent blanket tariff on Chinese goods to twenty percent.
The Chinese government responded by imposing tariffs up to fifteen percent on several key American agricultural goods, such as livestock, soybeans, chicken, and pork.
The leading producer of steel, China, said that it will also "do everything" to respond to newly imposed US tariffs on steel and Aluminum.
Xi's most recent visit to the US was in November 2023, when he spent time in California with Trump's predecessor Biden, in efforts to alleviate the escalating strain between the two world leaders.
