New Flight Baggage Rules: Travelers Take Note. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has updated the guidelines for luggage during air travel. Going forward, each passenger may bring a single cabin or hand bag into the cabin, weighing no more than 7 kg. This regulation applies to every domestic and international flight, and compliance will be strictly enforced.

The rule’s goal is to enhance security as passenger traffic grows while also simplifying boarding and check-in. Under the updated guidelines, passengers must check all bags except the hand-sized item. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), along with other security teams, will conduct more thorough inspections of checked luggage. The changes acknowledge the rising passenger volumes and evolving security threats. By narrowing the amount of cabin baggage, the overall security and operational flow at airports will improve, allowing for quicker and more effective screening.

The new requirements state:

1. Travelers may bring only one cabin or hand bag into the passenger cabin.

2. Your cabin bag can weigh no more than 7 kg.

3. The bag’s maximum measurements are 40 cm (length) x 20 cm (width) x 55 cm (height).

4. You may also bring a small personal item—like a laptop bag, a women’s purse, or another compact bag—that weighs no more than 3 kg.

5. Failing to follow these rules could lead to additional fees or fines.

New airline rules

Air India and IndiGo have clarified their updated baggage rules. In Air India’s economy and premium economy classes, you may bring a cabin bag weighing up to 7 kg. However, in business and first class, the limit rises to 10 kg. IndiGo permits one cabin bag (max 7 kg) and one personal item (max 3 kg) per passenger, with the combined maximum size not exceeding 115 cm.

Tips for passengers

Always weigh and measure your bag prior to your journey. If your luggage exceeds the 7 kg limit, transfer the extra to checked baggage. Remember, baggage rules can differ from airline to airline, so review your carrier’s specific guidelines.

Always keep crucial items—passport, ticket, medication, and any must-carry belongings—in your handbag, separate from checked baggage.

The latest updates to air travel guidelines aim to enhance both safety and ease for travelers. These adjustments mark an important move toward smoother, more orderly journeys from start to finish.
