At CinemaCon 2025 in Las Vegas, Tom Cruise delivered an emotional tribute to his late friend and Top Gun co-star Val Kilmer, who passed away on April 1, 2025, at the age of 65 due to complications from pneumonia.
Speaking at the industry event, Cruise reflected on Kilmer’s contributions to film, calling him a “dear friend” and expressing deep gratitude for their time together on both Top Gun (1986) and Top Gun: Maverick (2022).
Top Gun Reunion and Kilmer’s Resilience
Cruise, 62, recalled their work on the original Top Gun, where he played Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and Kilmer portrayed Tom “Iceman” Kazansky. Their rivalry and eventual camaraderie became a hallmark of the film. Kilmer’s return in Top Gun: Maverick was seen as a milestone, especially as he continued to battle health issues following a 2015 throat cancer diagnosis.
Despite undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, and a tracheotomy that altered his voice, Kilmer made a powerful return. Advanced voice AI technology was used to help bring his character back to life on screen.
A Moment of Reflection for a Celebrated Career
During his speech, Cruise invited the audience to remember Kilmer’s legacy, stating, “He loved movies and he gave a lot to all of us.” He asked for a moment of reflection, honoring Kilmer’s impact and spirit.
In a past interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2022, Cruise described his reunion with Kilmer on set as emotional, noting that Kilmer effortlessly returned to his role: “You’re looking at Iceman.”
Val Kilmer’s Enduring Impact
Kilmer was a leading figure in Hollywood during the 1980s and 1990s, with standout performances in films like Batman Forever and The Doors. His resilience in facing health setbacks and his heartfelt return in Top Gun: Maverick remain defining parts of his legacy.
