This sacred day marks the beginning of a four-month period known as Chaturmas, during which Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, is believed to enter a state of cosmic slumber, or Yoganidra. This event has deep spiritual implications, guiding the rhythm of religious life for millions of devotees.
Also known as Ashadi Ekadashi or Hari Shayani Ekadashi, this observance falls on the eleventh lunar day (Ekadashi) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the Hindu month of Ashadha. For 2025, this has led to some confusion about the exact date.
When to Observe: July 6 or July 7, 2025?
The timing, according to the Drik Panchang, is as follows:
- The Ekadashi Tithi (lunar day) begins at 10:04 PM on July 6, 2025.
- The Ekadashi Tithi ends at 11:09 PM on July 7, 2025.
So, when should you observe the fast? The answer lies in a key principle of Hindu astrology: Udaya Tithi. This principle dictates that the day of a festival is the one on which the specific tithi is active during sunrise. Since the Ekadashi Tithi will be in effect at sunrise on Monday, July 7, 2025, this is the day the fast and associated rituals will be observed.
The Significance of Chaturmas
Lord Vishnu's four-month rest concludes on Prabodhini Ekadashi. This period of Chaturmas is considered spiritually potent and is dedicated to penance, fasting, and introspection. Consequently, auspicious ceremonies such as weddings, housewarmings, and other celebratory events are traditionally not held during these four months, as the divine blessings of Lord Vishnu are focused inward.
Rituals and Observances
