India's supreme court has provided relief for West Bengal teachers who had their appointments cancelled over a 2016 recruitment drive due to unsystematic hiring. The court stated that instructors deemed "")untainted""—those not embroiled in or associated with any misconduct—will be able to teach till the state conducts selection processes in the region.

This was after the court, on April 3, instructed more than 26,000 teaching and non-teaching appointments to be canceled because of rampant recruitment fraud by West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC).

Fresh Recruitment Dates For West Bengal Government

The supreme court has directed the Government of West Bengal to initiate a fresh recruitment drive on the 31st of May and culminate it by 31st December, enhancing transparency and equity in terms of employment selection in government and government-aided schools in the state.

Background Information: The West Bengal SSC Recruitment Scam

The 2016 WBSSC recruitment has been at the center of a significant controversy, widely referred to as the school jobs-for-cash scam. The Calcutta High Court annulled 25,753 appointments made because of unproven evidence of endorsement as fraudulent and manipulative. This approach was later taken by the supreme court.

The answer sheets and OMR sheets were found to have been manipulated, as they contained blank answers and altered merit lists. Numerous reports also suggested that several people paid bribes to gain undeserved access to teaching positions, bypassing the system designed to evaluate candidates objectively. Some local politicians are also suspected in the ongoing inquiry.
