Navigating Mumbai's bustling streets is about to get a lot easier and greener. By the end of this month, a new electric bike taxi service is set to launch across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), offering a fresh option for daily commuters.
After much anticipation, the state's transport authority has given provisional licenses to three of the biggest names in ride-hailing Ola, Uber, and Rapido—to get their e-bike taxis on the road. This is seen as a major step forward in solving the "last-mile connectivity" puzzle, making it simpler for people to get to and from train stations and bus stops.
One of the most appealing aspects of this new service is its affordability. The fare has been fixed at a wallet-friendly ₹15 for the first 1.5 kilometers, with each additional kilometer costing just ₹10.27. This pricing makes it a significantly cheaper alternative to traditional black-and-yellow taxis and auto-rickshaws, which have minimum fares of ₹31 and ₹26, respectively.
The launch is governed by the new "Maharashtra Bike-Taxi Rules, 2025," which prioritize safety and sustainability.Only electric bikes are permitted, and they must be painted yellow to be easily recognizable. Companies are required to have a minimum fleet of 50 e-bikes to start
For passengers, safety features are built into the service. All bookings must be made through the app, which will have GPS tracking and a panic button. There will also be an option for female passengers to select a female rider.
Strict rules are also in place for the drivers, who must be between 20 and 50 years old and hold a valid commercial license They will also need to pass police verification. To ensure safety for both driver and passenger, two yellow helmets will be provided with each bike, and they must be sanitized after every trip.
The companies have been given a 30-day provisional license and will need to meet all the requirements to secure a permanent one. For Mumbai's commuters, this new, eco-friendly option could be a game-changer in how they navigate the city.
