Samajwadi Party MP from Sambhal, Ziaur Rahman Barq, appeared before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) today in connection with the 2023 Sambhal riots. Prior to the questioning, Barq visited the local police station. The SIT is currently recording his statement as part of the investigation into the incident.
Barq has been accused of inciting violence on November 24, 2023, when a team from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) arrived to conduct a court-ordered survey.
Details of the SIT Summons
The SIT had summoned Barq on March 25 in Delhi. At the time, he was staying at Room 39 of the Western Court Guest House. He was issued a formal notice there, calling him in for questioning today regarding the violence.
Casualties and FIR in the Sambhal Violence
The violence that occurred on November 24 resulted in the deaths of five individuals. Following the incident, an FIR was registered against Barq on November 25, accusing him of provoking the crowd and contributing to the unrest.
Legal Protection from Arrest
Although Ziaur Rahman Barq is the main accused in the case, the Allahabad High Court has issued a stay on his arrest. However, the court has not quashed the FIR against him, despite Barq’s petition requesting its cancellation. As a result, the investigation continues, and the SIT is proceeding with the interrogation.
Barq had also delivered a speech at Jama Masjid in Sambhal two days before the violence, which is currently under scrutiny by the investigation team.
