Today's women juggle demanding careers and household duties, often at the cost of their own health. Experts now warn that this lifestyle imbalance is contributing to a significant rise in tuberculosis (TB) cases among women.

According to a recent medical report presented on World TB Day, working professionals and housewives alike are becoming more vulnerable to TB. Stress from work environments, inadequate nutrition, and neglect of personal health are the major factors leading to this health crisis.

Experts Highlight Immunity as a Key Factor

Dr. Kollabattula Ratnababu, interventional pulmonologist at Aster Prime Hospital, points out that many women delay diagnosis and treatment because they prioritize their family or job responsibilities over their own well-being. Pulmonologist Dr. M. Rajeev noted that India contributes about 25% of global TB cases, underscoring the scale of the issue.

Tuberculosis is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which typically remains dormant until the immune system weakens. Conditions such as poor diet, chronic stress, thyroid problems, diabetes, and hypertension can trigger the activation of TB. Dr. Ratnababu specifically noted a rise in lymph node TB among housewives.

Government Measures to Combat TB

To support TB patients, the Indian government has launched several healthcare initiatives:

  • Nikshay Poshan Yojana: Offers free TB medication and ₹500 monthly nutritional support.
  • Combination Therapy: Essential TB drugs are now available in a single tablet to ease treatment adherence.
  • Telangana’s Campaigns: The state has introduced mobile testing units, the Health Nagaram project, and a 100-day TB elimination programme for better detection and management.

Preventive Steps for Women

  • Prioritize Health: Regular check-ups, proper sleep, and self-care are crucial.
  • Balanced Diet: Ensure adequate intake of nutrients to strengthen immunity.
  • Stress Management: Incorporate relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation.
  • Seek Timely Treatment: Early diagnosis and adherence to medication are vital in preventing TB progression.
