Most judges in the highest court of Brazil have issued allegations against ex president Jair Bolsonaro. He is to adjudge in court for purportedly plotting to usurp the government after becoming a loser from the election in 2022.
A three panel judge out of a five panel judge has started the trial against Bolsonaro. If the court finds him guilty, which seems likely as the trial is expected this year, he could potentially be locked up for over 20 years.
One week after president Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva’s inauguration, dramatic videos of Bolsonaro's fans overcoming multiple government buildings were shown by justice Alexandre De Morais during his first speech. Violence occurred during the first week, in January 2023.
Boilicaptor Bolsonaro who served as the president from 2019 to 2022 is seen as a further left candidate. He has been accused of violent attempts of taking down the ruling power in place of democracy, along with a violent attempted coup.
In one of his statements, Moraes claimed that Bolsonaro fueled doubt against the electronic voting systems in Brazil and that was part of his election undermining strategy.
The Supreme Court sessions began with reviewing accusations against Bolsonaro and his seven closest aides on a voluntary basis, where he chose to attend, sitting in silence like the front row of an audience during the trial of former President Donald Trump.
To galvanize support and further pressure Congress into passing the amnesty that would benefit him and his supporters, Bolsonaro also sought to capitalize on Lula's decreasing public approval rating by holding a beachfront rally in Rio De Janerio prior to the unprecedented hearing.
The former President’s aide’s believed the rally would be attended by over a million people However, independent polling agencies concluded the demonstration a bust as they estimated anywhere from only twenty to thirty thousand people joining as attendance.
Though facing the verdict from Superior Electoral Court barring him from holding public positions until the year 2030, which stem from his attempt in delegitimizing the electoral voting system, Bolsonaro has maintained his position to run for presidency next year.
