Priyanka Chopra has candidly discussed the significance of family on several occasions, and most recently, during an interview, her mother, Madhu Chopra, reminisced about a particularly touching moment which reflects the actress’s immense compassion and dedication towards her family. Ashok Chopra, Priyanka’s father, passed away on June 10, and Madhu’s birthday was just six days later on June 16.
Even with that level of grief, Priyanka did not want her family to suffer any more emotional trauma, and thus resolved to celebrate her mother’s first birthday without her husband. Priyanka’s great desire towards honoring the occasion showed just how much she wanted to take care of the family’s emotional state during a terrible time.
In an interview with Lehren Retro, Madhu Chopra remembered how Priyanka insisted on celebrating her birthday despite the grief surrounding her father’s death. “He died on June 10, and my birthday is on 16th. I was celebrating my 60th birthday and my family had already planned a huge celebration for me. Since he was sick, the entire family was already there. We were mourning, and Priyanka said we should carry on with the party and told everyone to stay, saying, ‘That’s what dad would have wanted,’ which was very disrespectful,” she said.
To make the event even more memorable, Madhu alleged that Priyanka also invited her co-star John Abraham to the party. Madhu said, “They told John not to come until midnight and to wrap himself in some gift and come. Just imagine that!”
Even so, some family members were not as enthusiastic. Some relatives did not support the celebrations and doubted the amount of grief Priyanka actually felt. “But the other family members were very quiet, and said, ‘Look at her! She’s dancing! She doesn’t look as though she is mourning her husband at all,’” Yet Priyanka did not back down and told the family, “You have to accept I am fulfilling his wish. So, get on board!”
After a long-fought c battle, Ashok Chopra passed away in 2013. In remembrance of him, Priyanka tattooed ‘Daddy’s little girl’ on her wrist in his handwriting, signifying the bond they shared.
