
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent a heartfelt letter to Indian-origin NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, who recently began her return journey to Earth from the International Space Station (ISS). The letter, shared by Union Minister Jitendra Singh on March 1, was written to express gratitude and extend best wishes for her safe return.
PM Modi Invites Sunita Williams to Visit India
In the letter, PM Modi enquired about Sunita Williams' health and extended a warm invitation for her to visit India. Sunita Williams had been aboard the ISS since June 2024, and her long-duration mission had captured the imagination of millions across the world, particularly in India.

A few days earlier, PM Modi had met former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino at an event, where the conversation turned to Sunita Williams. The Prime Minister expressed his desire for his message and the people of India's best wishes to reach Sunita. He wished her strength and a safe journey home, reaffirming India's deep connection to its celebrated daughter.
Sunita Williams Expresses Gratitude
Sunita Williams, moved by the gesture, thanked PM Modi and the people of India for their continued support and encouragement. Her acknowledgment underscored the emotional bond between India and its pioneering astronaut.
PM Modi Recalls His Meeting with Mike Massimino
In the letter, PM Modi mentioned his recent meeting with Mike Massimino in Delhi and how Sunita’s name came up during their conversation. The Prime Minister shared that they had discussed how proud the country is of her achievements. He further noted that the conversation inspired him to write the letter to Sunita Williams.
"1.4 billion Indians have always taken great pride in your achievements. Recent developments have yet again showcased your inspirational fortitude and perseverance," PM Modi wrote in his message to Sunita.
