
Narendra Modi has sternly instructed the officials to impose maximum punishment in regards to the gang rape incident of a 19-year-old girl in Varanasi. This was recommended just after he arrived to the city to open and commence building some projects.
As per an official release Modi was given a detailed briefing at the airport by the police commissioner, divisional commissioner, and district magistrate. Modi has inquired if the steps which have been planned will help in ensuring the desired outcomes in terms of preventive measures being taken for such crimes.
It is reported that this woman was allegedly gang raped by 23 men from March 29 to April 4 for a period extending 6 days. Police reports suggest she was under some sort of medication and was transported around different hotels in the region. Sooner or later they decided to register a complaint on April 6.
Police have lodged the complaint under a number of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) which include section for gang rape, assault with intent to outrage modesty, poisoning, wrongful restrainment and harassment along with criminal intimidation.
As of now, police have made 12 arrests which include the following names Raj Vishwakarma, Sameer, Ayush, Sohail, Danish, Anmol, Sajid, Zahir, Imran, Jaib, Aman and Raj Khan. Further attempts are being made to arrest the other 11 assailants.
The Additional Police Commissioner, Vidush Saxena has confirmed the arrests stating that there is a continued effort to make sure every individual is arrested and charged.
The mother of the daughter has said that she hopes to meet PM Modi and tell him the experience of her daughter. She also went on to say that there needs to be strict measures taken against these individuals so that such cases do not occur again. Moreover, she commended the police for their aid in the case and said that the trauma from the attack has taken a toll on her daughter’s health which has been quite severe.
His 50th visit to Varanasi as Prime Minister since 2014 was also said to be in the same year. In this trip, 44 projects worth ₹3,880 crore were inaugurated by him. During this speech, he made a promise to continue working on development projects and said “Kashi meri hai aur main Kashi ka hoon” (Varanasi belongs to me and I belong to Varanasi).
