Tehran: An Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander and his pilot were killed on Monday when an autogyro (a helicopter-like aircraft) crashed during an operation near the Pakistan border in Iran. General Hamid Mazandarani died during a military operation in the Sirkan border region in Sistan and Baluchistan province, state TV reported. The semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that the accident occurred during a military exercise.

It is used for border surveillance.

The ‘autogyro’ is similar to a helicopter in terms of rotor design, but is simpler and smaller. It is commonly used in Iran for pilot training and border surveillance. The aircraft is capable of carrying two people.
