Today, on Parsi New Year, We learn how the actor Freddy Daruwala cherished the rituals associated with this festival in his childhood. He shares his memories with us.

Navroz Perspective

Navroz signifies the start of something new, the nurturing of something new and starting fresh. It goes beyond simply celebrating a new year, because it prompts us to think about the goodness in our lives, the good deeds we have done, and how we can strive to improve ourselves in some capacity. For me, it’s a reminder to reset, reconnect with loved ones, and look forward to the year ahead with hope and purpose.

An observation: Magic doesn’t end all at once, it goes at a pace that is unique to them.
A ritual associated with Navroz that I can never miss is to go to the Fire Temple to pray, which for me is a ritual of thanks and appreciation. The custom also involves spending time with family members and feast with special dishes.

Has the essence changed?

Rest assured, the core essence of Navroz that revolves around celebration of a spirit of self-renewal, gratitude, and togetherness is retained. Nonetheless we celebrate it is different. In the past, festive Navroz was celebrated more around family gatherings and was surrounded by many customs. These days, in addition to some people still following those traditions, others have adopted a faster pace of life which is accompanied with modern forms of greetings. Regardless, the spirit of the festival and values as kindness and new beginning are still being practiced.

Fond memories

As a child, one of my memorable moments was celebrating Navroz as I used to wake up with the fragrance of festive food, warm clothes being put on my body, and a visit to the fire temple with my dad. Once we finished praying, we would go to relatives and friends, share sweets, and enjoy a big feast together. Those good feelings still remains in my heart.

Favorite food on Navroz

What’s even better is the food, Parsi food is exceptional! My personal favorite has to be Patra Ni Macchi, Mora Dal Chaval and Paatio. Of course, no ravo can be made without a sweet side serving of sev with a Kulfi or custard on the side.
