Mark Carney, the newly-appointed Prime Minister of Canada, claimed on Monday that he has not ruled out a conversation with US President Donald Trump but claims it would be done “on the terms of Canada’s sovereignty.”
Carney leads the ruling Liberal Party, which held elections on Marach 9. He was granted prime minister status as soon as he became head of the party. As a habit of the US presidents, he usually tends to make these calls shortly afterwards, however, they are yet to connect.
“I am available for a call but let me tell you, we are going to talk on our terms as a soveriegn country, not as what he imagines us to be,” stated Carney to reporters in Newfoundland on his second day of campaigning for general elections.
There have been threats made by Trump regarding tariffs placed on Canadian imports, alongside his casual comments of Canada being annexed that Carney underscored were unhelpful and disrespectful.
Carney also stated that he assumes Trump is interested in the elections and is going to wait for the results to issue a call to the winner’s garder.
