Beth Mooney, who scored an unbeaten 75, and Georgia Voll, who scored 50, put on pugnacious half centuries to devastate current T20 world champions New Zealand with a thorough eight wicket victory which was well set up by disciplined bowling in Auckland on Friday. In Australia’s is inhapsjhoblchsn motion of chasing down a total of 138 runs, Mooney and Voll scored 77 runs during the PowerPlay which is the highest any Australian pair, including men, have scored. Australia thrashed the home team’s bowlers which meant that they achieved their target with an astonishing 39 balls to spare. Australia set yet another record by scoring 123 runs without losing a wicket and this was achieved in only 11 overs. This was totally enough while Lea Tahuhu was able to get two wickets, but it was far too late in the day for the host team.

New Zealand batted first in the series opener and struggled with the Australian bowling lineup. Their PowerPlay active period returned just 40 runs for the loss of one wicket. After a solid start, New Zealand lost both openers, and were struggling at 47/2 by the 8th over mark. On ODI return after a break for health reasons, Sophie Devine (39 runs off 36 balls)alongside Amelia Kerr (51 not out off 46 balls) put up a 90 run partnership for the third wicket, but New Zealands total of 137 runs after the allotted overs was never going to be enough to challenge Australia.

Aussie star allrounder Ash Gardner's injury after trying to attempt a return blunt catch to her finger makes her a doubtful candidate for the remaining of the games set to be played on Sunday.

In short scores: New Zealand 137/2 in 20 overs (Amelia Kerr 51*, Sophie Devine 39*; Darcie Brown 1-22) lost to Australia 138/2 in 13.3 overs (Beth Mooney 75*, Georgia Voll 50; Lea Tahuhu 2-31) by 8 wickets
