Suspense crime, Digital Desk : It remains one of the most legendary moments in the annals of Indian television history: the time when fan power literally brought a character back from the dead. Actor Amar Upadhyay, who became a national heartthrob as Mihir Virani in the iconic soap opera Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, recently reflected on the unprecedented events that led to his character's historic comeback.
In 2001, at the peak of the show's popularity, producers at Balaji Telefilms made a daring decision: they killed off Mihir, the ideal son and husband. The reaction was immediate and seismic. What the producers hadn't anticipated was a nationwide outpouring of grief and anger. The channel's offices were deluged with phone calls and letters, fans held candlelight vigils, and some even took to the streets in protest, demanding the return of their beloved character.
The public outcry was so immense that it forced the creators to reverse their decision. In a recent reflection on that career-defining period, Amar Upadhyay recalled the pivotal phone call from the show's formidable producer, Ekta Kapoor. She admitted they had misjudged the audience's emotional investment and wanted him back on the show.
Crucially, she made him a promise he would never forget. "Ekta called me and said, 'This is the first time in my life I’m calling an actor to come back to my show'," Amar shared. He recounted her assuring him, "You're going to come back. And I promise you one thing... Mihir is here to stay right till the final episode."
And so, in a storyline reversal of epic proportions, Mihir Virani made a triumphant return to the screen, much to the delight of millions of viewers. The promise was kept, and Amar Upadhyay remained an integral part of the show until its conclusion in 2008.
The resurrection of Mihir Virani was more than just a plot twist; it was a watershed moment that demonstrated the immense power of the Indian television audience. It permanently cemented the show, the character of Mihir, and the actor Amar Upadhyay into the fabric of Indian pop culture history.
