In a significant and direct statement, former U.S. President Donald Trump has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, urging all parties to "make the deal." Speaking at a press conference, he also issued a blunt demand to Hamas for the immediate release of all remaining hostages.
"We want to see a ceasefire. We've got to get it done," Trump stated at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. This remark clarifies his position on the ongoing war, which has seen him previously criticize Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's military strategy.
Addressing the militant group directly, Trump said, "Hamas, get the hostages out now."
The call places him in a unique position, simultaneously criticizing the approaches of both Israeli leadership and his political rival, President Joe Biden. Trump has repeatedly claimed that the war, which began with Hamas's terror attack on October 7, would not have happened under his presidency and has accused Biden of having "no clue" how to handle the escalating crisis.
Trump's direct appeal to "make the deal" echoes the language used by international mediators who have been struggling for months to broker an agreement between Israel and Hamas. The proposed deals have typically involved a phased ceasefire in exchange for the release of hostages held in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners in Israel.
As the US presidential election heats up, Trump's statement on the highly sensitive conflict is being closely watched, signaling how he might approach the crisis if he returns to office.
