Suspense crime, Digital Desk : A significant multi-state civil defence exercise, codenamed "Agni-Daman V," scheduled to take place on June 13 and 14 in Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh, has been postponed. The decision to defer the drill was communicated by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
According to official communication from the Director General (Fire Services, Civil Defence & Home Guards) under the MHA, the postponement is due to "administrative reasons" and "unavoidable circumstances." While not explicitly stated as the sole cause, the prevailing severe heatwave conditions across these northern and western regions are understood to be a significant contributing factor.
The "Agni-Daman V" exercise was designed to be a comprehensive evaluation of the preparedness and response capabilities of the Civil Defence organizations in these states and UT. The drill aimed to test their readiness in handling various emergency scenarios, including chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) disasters, as well as natural calamities. This was reportedly the fifth such exercise in a series aimed at bolstering national disaster response mechanisms.
Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police (DGPs) of the concerned states and Chandigarh have been informed about the decision. The MHA has indicated that fresh dates for this crucial preparedness exercise will be intimated at a later stage. The postponement underscores the challenges, including extreme weather phenomena, that can impact large-scale training and preparedness activities.
