The vrat katha centers around the life of Khadgalsena, who underwent intense penance to be blessed later in life with a son named Sujan Kunwar. Astrological predictions by soothsayers had placed a strict time restriction on the princely son. He was not allowed to head north until the age of 20. On a lavish hunting expedition, Sujan accidentally stumbled upon a northern forest where sages had taken a vow of silence.
