While parts of North India are still seeing occasional rain and snow, the state of Gujarat has officially entered a "severe" summer phase. On Wednesday and Thursday, March 11–12, 2026, the state recorded some of the highest temperatures in the country, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue both Orange and Yellow alerts.
The Hottest Spots in the Country The numbers are staggering for mid-March. Rajkot has emerged as the heat capital, recording a blistering 42°C nearly 8 degrees above the seasonal average. Not far behind is Ahmedabad, where the mercury touched 41.4°C. In some neighboring regions like Nandurbar, the temperature even spiked to 42.4°C, making it the hottest day of the year so far.
Why is it So Hot So Early? Meteorologists point to a powerful anti-cyclone system currently positioned over Rajasthan. This system is driving dry, hot winds directly into Gujarat, causing the air to sink and heat up—a process known as subsidence. Experts warn that the "spring season" has practically disappeared this year, with a jarringly fast transition from winter to extreme summer.
The Alert Breakdown:
Orange Alert (Take Action): Issued for Rajkot and Surendranagar for Thursday, where "severe heatwave" conditions are expected.
Yellow Alert (Be Updated): Issued for districts including Banaskantha, Patan, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Kutch, and Junagadh.
Coastal Warning: Coastal areas are expected to experience "hot and humid" air, which significantly increases the risk of heat exhaustion and discomfort.
Health Advisory: Staying Safe in the Surge With temperatures sitting 5°C to 7°C above normal, local authorities have issued a list of must-follow guidelines:
Peak Hours: Avoid going outdoors between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM unless absolutely necessary.
Hydration: Drink plenty of water and natural fluids like buttermilk (chaas) or coconut water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
Attire: Wear loose, light-colored cotton clothing and always use a hat, umbrella, or scarf when stepping out.
As the heatwave is expected to continue until at least Friday, March 13, the pressure on Gujarat’s power grid and water resources is already beginning to show. In a global landscape governed by the "whims" of shifting climate patterns, this early onset is a serious wake-up call for the months ahead.
