Mahashivratri is the most significant night for devotees of Lord Shiva, a time when the cosmic energy is said to be at its peak. In 2026, as millions prepare to offer prayers and perform Abhishek, it's important to remember that Shiva is easily pleased (Ashutosh), but the scriptures suggest a specific decorum for his worship.

Often, in our zeal, we make small mistakes during the Shivling Puja that might hinder the full spiritual benefits of the fast. If you are planning to visit a temple or perform puja at home this Mahashivratri, here is a guide to doing it the right way.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The Wrong Leaves: While Belpatra is essential, never offer torn leaves or those without the "Chakra" (the three-leaf cluster). Also, avoid offering Tulsi leaves to the Shivling, as according to Puranas, it is forbidden in Shiva worship.

The Turmeric & Vermilion Rule: Unlike other deities, Turmeric (Haldi) and Kumkum are generally not applied to the Shivling. Since the Shivling represents the male principle and Haldi is associated with feminine beauty, experts suggest using Bhasma (sacred ash) or White Sandalwood instead.

The Half-Circumambulation (Parikrama): Never complete a full circle around the Shivling. You must stop at the Jaldhari (the water outlet) and turn back. Crossing the Som-Sutra (the outlet) is considered disrespectful to the energy flowing from the deity.

Avoid Bronze Vessels for Milk: While performing Abhishek, never use a bronze (Kansya) pot to offer milk, as it turns the milk into a "toxic" equivalent in spiritual terms. Use Copper for water and Brass or Silver for milk.

The Correct Way to Perform Shivling Puja

The Sequence of Abhishek: Start with water, followed by Panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar), and end with a final rinse of pure Ganga water.

The Placement of Belpatra: Always place the smooth side of the Belpatra leaf touching the Shivling.

The Direction: Sit facing North or East while performing the puja. Facing South is generally avoided during auspicious rituals.

By following these simple traditional rules, you can ensure your Mahashivratri Vrat is performed with complete devotion and accuracy.
