The seizure of the house belonging to the late actor Sivaji Ganesan has been authorized by the Chennai Madras high court amidst a dispute between his grandson Dusshyanth and his wife Abirami regarding a loan.
The case goes back to when the couple took a loan from Eesan Productions for purposes involving the Tamil film Jagajaala Killadi. The opposing side took legal action after they defaulted on their repayment agreement.
As mentioned in a report by India Today, “An Eesan Productions Company, owned by the couple, controlled by private lenders, funded the Tamil movie Jagajaala Killadi acted by Vishnu Vishal and Nivetha Pethuraj. The loan is still outstanding and unpaid. The repayment terms include an exorbitant compound interest of 30%.”
When the loan was not paid back, retired Chennai High Court Justice T Ravindran was tasked with mediation to settle the issue. Upon his investigation, Justice Ravindran handed down a ruling on May 4, 2024, that all rights to Jagajaala Killadi be wildly transferred to the managing director of the private enterprise in order to recoup the debt. By then, the principal and interest had ballooned to Rs 9.2 crore. The mediator directed that the film’s rights be used as a currency for the unpaid loan and any surplus be paid back to Eesan Productions.
But, Eesan Productions argued that the film shouldn’t be showcased because it was never finished, even when it was taken from them to comply with the ruling. In a bid to enforce the mediator's decision, the private company sought the court's help to confiscate some assets to the property of Sivaji Ganesan that Dusshyan's father and Ramkumar also signed in relation to the loan.
Consequently, Judge Abdul Quddhose granted permission on the property seizure noting that Eesan Productions did not file a counter petition even after being provided with more time. The judge further ordered that the relevant sub-registrar was to be informed of the orders of the court. It has now been scheduled for another hearing on March 5, meanwhile, the loan refunding which is currently at the value of Rs 9.39 crore has yet to be repaid.
