Actor Karan Patel, known for his role in the hit television series Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, recently spoke about his career break in a podcast with Bharti Singh. He revealed that he hasn't received a single TV show offer in the past six years.
“I haven’t been offered any daily soap in six years. Every day, 150-200 new actors enter the industry, and they work for far less than what we used to earn,” he explained. Karan noted a shift in the TV industry, stating that producers now opt to create multiple web series instead of one television show due to budget preferences.
Criticism of OTT Platforms and Content Trends
Karan also addressed the lack of roles coming his way from OTT platforms. He expressed his disapproval of the current trend in web content, describing it as overly dependent on sensational elements.
“Most OTT content today has turned into soft porn. If there’s no sleaze or intimate scene, people don’t want to watch—even when it’s not necessary for the story,” he said.
Views on Bollywood’s Lack of Experimentation
The actor criticized the film industry's repetitive approach to content. Referring to popular films like Kabir Singh and Animal, Karan said that success leads to replication, not innovation. He also pointed out that big production houses like Dharma and YRF, once famous for romance films, are now focusing mostly on thrillers.
He praised Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films for experimenting with genres like horror comedy. “Look at what Maddock did with Stree and Go Goa Gone—genres no one invested in before,” he added.
