On Wednesday, CJI Sanjiv Khanna has officially placed a recommendation for Justice BR Gavai’s appointment as his successor. The recommendation has already been forwarded to the Union Law Ministry for clearance. Following this, Justice Gavai will be taking his oath as the new Chief Justice of India on May 14, 2025, succeeding Justice Khanna after his 6-month term.  

Tenure and Background of Justice Gavai  

Around the end of this year in 2023, Justice Gavai will turn 65 and thus he will serve as Chief Justice for roughly 6 months until his retirement on November 23, 2025. His legal career commenced in 1985, when he registered himself as an advocate.  

During the early stage of his legal career, Justice Gavai practiced with the late Bar. Raja S Bhonsale who was an Advocate General to the High Court as well as a High Court Judge. From 1987 to 1990, he practiced at Bombay High Court, later on shifting his focus to the Nagpur Bench where he specialized in Constitutional and Administrative Law.

Judicial Career Highlights

Justice Gavai has held several important legal and judicial positions in his career:  

Appointed as Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on November 14, 2003  
Confirmed as Permanent Judge on November 12, 2005  
Supreme Court Judge from May 24, 2019  

He was also a Judge at the Bombay High Court and as such, he covered regions like Mumbai, Nagpur, Aurangabad, and Panaji. He worked as Standing Counsel for various civic and educational bodies such as the Nagpur and Amravati Municipal Corporations and Amravati University.
