Mohammed Qasim Ansari and Mohammed Nawaz Malik, senior leaders of the Janata Dal (United), have resigned from the party. The resignations come in response to JD(U)'s support for the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024, which passed both houses of Parliament despite considerable opposition.
Disappointment With Party Leadership
In a formal letter addressed to JD(U) president and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Ansari conveyed his strong disapproval of the party’s stance. He emphasized that the decision had deeply disappointed the Muslim community and activists who had trusted JD(U) to protect secular principles.
"Millions of Indian Muslims like us had unwavering faith in you as a flag bearer of a truly secular ideology. However, that belief has now been shattered," Ansari stated in the letter, as quoted by PTI.
Criticism of Parliamentary Conduct
Ansari specifically criticized JD(U) leader Lallan Singh’s support for the bill during the Lok Sabha session, calling his remarks disheartening. He said the speech highlighted the party's departure from its previously inclusive and secular stand.
End of Long Association
Citing a loss of faith in the party’s direction, Ansari announced his resignation from the JD(U)’s primary membership and gave up all official responsibilities held within the organization. Mohammed Nawaz Malik also stepped down in a similar manner, expressing parallel concerns over the party’s ideological shift.
