Suspense crime, Digital Desk : The 2025 IPL season has been an eye-opener for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). They seemed CSK-ish, as if they had everything sorted, but had failed to build a consistent level of performance over the season. Instead, they found themselves fighting to avoid the wooden spoon. To add salt to the wound, they were eliminated mid-way through the league and had to miss out on the luxurious postseason perks that come alongside qualifying for the playoffs, which CSK were accustomed to. This marks a ubiquitous fall from grace for CSK, who hold five IPL titles upto what was once the undisputed heavyweigt of the league.
After suffering a crippling six-wicket loss against the Rajasthan Royals in Delhi, CSK Head Coach Stephen Fleming was forced to undergo damage control and make some boundary less statements. He incredibly ‘harshly’ said that they had no option but ‘to put on display the type of cricket we have sunk to’, utterly throwing the team under the bus. After aiming for some minimal form of accountability, he set the expectation for the Gratefully the team just manages to deliver one resonable performance whilst “heading straight into the ground”.
For CSK, it was too late. They had crossed the exit gate more than two weeks ago, leaving them with what over the last few weeks had just become glorified scrimmage matches for the sprinkled with costume-like uniforms under the premise of youth of the team's future.
The attacking batting style and the ordering of the players by level of care they give for each game serves as the number one dilemma.
They have had the worst record among all teams this year, with their head coach Stephen Fleming acknowledging the lack of breakthroughs from the young top-order batting stars. Struggles tend to stem from a lack of responsiveness to new tactical changes being brought in. Young promising standouts like Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis sadly, have had no backing from the support staff leading to their skills not being put to good use.
Wielding the bat strategically lower down the order, veteran Ravindra Jadeja was placed at No.4, a position he rarely plays, while Ashwin was pushed up to open — initially a trial, later a tactical switch — during the powerplay against his old franchise, RR. Fleming noted that the upper order not scoring has resulted in massive shifts in intended batting slots,.
Pathirana's Perturbation regarding Decline of Form is a Blunt Varnish to Bowling Attack
Matheesha Pathirana’s form has been subpar this season, surrendering to an economy that tips over 10. Leading in once fully fueled era of becoming a key bowler weapon, having undergone major surgery, losing his rhythm with the remodeled action has sanded down his effectiveness.
Fleming mentioned the struggled form of Pathirana but did not linger to dismiss: “He is at a crossroads. They’ve adjusted to him. He has to adapt again to gain that advantage back.” Building that first pillar of form for fresh face young Sri Lankan will be critical in his pursuit of regaining form.
The Rise of Anshul Kamboj along with Noor Ahmad’s Average Performance
With Noor Ahmad being ranked very high in terms of the Purple Cap, his aggregate value is hindered due to an all ranging high economy rate. The Afghan placed spinner who over controls in the middle overs has indeed been contended while seitng to maintain measure.
On the other hand, Anshul Kamboj seems to have gained praise for CSK. Sabbatical from the team did not hinder Kamboj's stride as he unleashed fiery new-ball spells with sprinting seam movement. Deceiving lengths around 138-139 kilometers per hour and tempered zeal have earned him acclaim in both white-ball and red-ball formats.
Fleming lauded Kamboj’s skillset alongside the impressive domestic double of 10 wicket haul in Ranji 2024 and subsequent selection for India A’s tour of England, stating, “Seam-friendly venues will pose a real challenge for him. There’s tremendous value in what he has offered us this season.”
CSK in Remedial Plan Modes for Trade and Rosters Refresh
Looking forward, the franchise CSK still holds underwhelming expectations after the disastrous finish to the 2025 campaign, but a lot of promising young talent coupled with truthful evaluations could aid CSK in restoring their former glory, provided the right moves are made this offseason.
Fleming made it clear that this season’s start problems combined with out-of-form players was strictly reactive tactics oriented. The lack of moderation that CSK stood for will be a primary focus moving forward. The organization states have plans for a complete overhauling set for 2026.
