IPL 2024: Gautam Gambhir will become the coach of Team India! Met Jay Shah after IPL final, speculation intensifies

Amidst the celebrations, he also took time to meet BCCI secretary Jay Shah, fuelling speculation about his possible future as India’s head coach. Gambhir is said to be the main contender to become the team’s next coach after Rahul Dravid.

For how many days will the contract be available?

Dravid’s tenure as India’s head coach ends after the 2024 T20 World Cup in June. The BCCI has started looking for his successor as Dravid did not reapply for the post. The new coach will get a contract till the 2027 ODI World Cup. Gambhir was an important member of the team that won the ODI World Cup in 2011. He played a match-winning innings of 97 runs in the final against Sri Lanka.

Jay Shah had told the choice of BCCI

Several Australian cricket legends, including Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer, were initially contenders for the coach’s post. However, they have refused to apply. After this, Jai Shah said that the BCCI prefers an Indian coach who is more familiar with domestic cricket. This preference puts Gambhir in a favorable position for the job.

Shah’s interaction with Gambhir on Sunday further fuelled the speculation. The BCCI secretary was seen congratulating Gambhir, taking photographs and having a long chat with him at KKR’s celebration in Chennai. The gesture was seen by many as an endorsement of Gambhir’s candidature for the role of head coach. Gambhir’s potential appointment as head coach is highly anticipated given his extensive experience and successful track record as both a player and a mentor. His strategic ability and familiarity with the current generation of Indian cricketers make him a strong candidate for the high-profile role.
