Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Last Friday, Pakistan received another blow the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved the disbursement of roughly $1 billion to Pakistan as part of the country's Extended Fund Facility. India chose to abstain from the vote, noting it had concerns over Pakistan's terrorism cross-border terrorism policy. New Delhi in its statement articulated that paying them for such behavior would not only undermine international efforts to curtail terrorism, but would damage the credibility of international institutions and the world democratic values that the institutions claim to uphold.
Congress Criticizes Abstention, Expects Aggressive Stance
Jairam Ramesh and the opposition Congress party were vocal in critiquing the government’s choice to abstain instead of adopting a vote in favor of opposing the funding. The party claims that India needed to oppose the loan in order to convey a message. Abstention, according to Jairam Ramesh, is a display of weakness, and he argued that issuing a “No” would have placed India’s image on a firmer standing globally.
Himanta Biswa Sarma Rips into Congress Counter Allegations
Sarma defended the Centre’s stance fiercely. The Chief Minister went to social media to claim that the IMF does not permit “No” votes. In Becahi's strong assertion, opting for a negative vote would mean extinction of India's sovereignty, emphasis instead on indicating an opposition within the framework which has relegated India's slam dunk international reputation to nothing.
Clarifying the IMF Voting System
Sarma highlighted that the IMF operates on a weighted voting system. A country’s financial participation determines its voting power. He emphasized that India chose to abstain from voting to send a serious message that the country does not wish to disrupt global financial order.
Accusations of Political Fact Inaccuracies
Sarma also accused Congress leaders, Jairam Ramesh, and Pawan Khera for issuing factually incorrect statements. In his defense, he said their comments demonstrated both ignorance or a deliberate attempt to educate falsely. He called the politicians irresponsible for Indian international diplomacy and added that India’s move was calculated and principled.
Comment by Omar Abdullah in the Discussion
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah seemed to join the criticism of IMF and argued logically as to why financial help has been extended to those who reportedly misuse such funding in anti-India endeavors. He suggested that this funding would essentially strengthen Pakistan’s anti-India operations.
