In a significant boost to India-Sri Lanka bilateral relations, the two nations signed their first-ever comprehensive defence cooperation pact following high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Colombo on Saturday.

The historic agreement marks a major milestone, coming nearly four decades after the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) was deployed in Sri Lanka. It underscores a renewed era of strategic and security collaboration between the neighboring countries.

Assurance on India’s Security Concerns

Addressing regional security concerns, President Dissanayake assured PM Modi that Sri Lankan territory will not be used against India's strategic interests, a statement seen as a clear reference to rising Chinese influence in the region.

“We believe that our security interests are aligned. The security of both countries is interlinked and dependent on each other,” said Prime Minister Modi after the signing.

He also thanked Dissanayake for being "sensitive to India's interests" and reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening regional stability.

Strengthening Energy Ties: Trincomalee to Become Energy Hub

Beyond defence, the leaders discussed energy cooperation, with a landmark agreement to develop Trincomalee as a regional energy hub. The coastal city’s strategic location is set to play a pivotal role in regional energy distribution and security.

The two leaders also virtually inaugurated the Sampur Solar Power Project, a joint initiative aimed at enhancing Sri Lanka’s energy independence and promoting sustainable development.

“The Sampur Solar Power Plant will benefit all Sri Lankans. The agreements signed for a multi-product pipeline and the development of Trincomalee will strengthen our energy partnership,” PM Modi said.

Mutual Acknowledgment of Support

President Dissanayake expressed deep appreciation for India’s unwavering support during Sri Lanka’s recent crises, highlighting New Delhi’s timely economic and humanitarian assistance.

“India’s solidarity during our times of need is deeply valued,” said Dissanayake, emphasizing the importance of long-term partnership.
