High Melatonin Dose Side Effects: A report suggests a well-known endocrinologist, Dr. Rashi Agrawal, was quoted saying in the Indian Express that a person does tend to sleep less or not sleep restfully at all. If this is the case, then it is apparent that melatonin is taken to aid in getting a good night’s rest. Dr. Rashi Agrawal goes on to explain that melatonin is a hormone that is synthesised by the body in a person’s pineal gland, and it’s primary role is regulating the sleep-wake cycle.
Disadvantages of excessive consumption of melatonin
Even though melatonin is known to promote and maintain sleep, it is prudent to mention there are adverse effects that come from too much consumption. Because of this, it is best to consult an expert before usage.
1. Overexcessive day time sleeping: Sleepiness from lack of mental challenge.
2. Mild dizziness and headache: Both fall under the set of symptoms that come from too much dosage.
3. Behavioral changes: These include overactive worries, uneasiness, restlessness, and or in some instances extreme discomfort “negative” effects of high dosage melatonin.
4. Issues with stomach: More likely to suffer from stomach cramps and/or nausea.
5. Alterations in sleep pattern: When high dosages of melatonin are consumed, the intended goal of helping a person sleep for a long period of time will not be achieved.
How much melatonin is too much?
Based on age, purpose, and sensitivity, practitioners decide diet. ” Some conditions may require 5-10mg to be taken, however excessive long-term dosage is advised against,” “To maximize results 1-3mg should be taken an hour before bed, but it ranges from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the individual.” Dr. Agarwal suggested it is best for most conditions as 1-3mg taken before bedtime.
