Smartphone Overuse Causes Sharp Decline in Teenagers' Math and Science Scores
The escalating reliance on smartphones, digital devices, and excessive screen time is taking a severe toll on the cognitive and academic abilities of teenagers worldwide. According to a comprehensive global assessment by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the reading, mathematics, and science proficiency levels of 15-year-old students have hit their lowest points this century. Education experts attribute this alarming drop to surging screen time and a sharp decline in traditional recreational reading habits. The expansive OECD report evaluated approximately 760,000 students aged 15 across 91 countries, highlighting that average student reading competency has plummeted to levels previously expected of children a full year younger.
Alarming Drops in Reading, Math, and Science Scores Worldwide
Data from the PISA report indicates a profound downward trend across core academic subjects. The average reading score has tumbled from a peak of 501 in 2012 down to 466. OECD Secretary-General Mathias Carmann noted that excessive screen time and diminished book reading correlate directly with weaker academic outcomes. Furthermore, students increasingly skim text rapidly, leading to hurried and incorrect answers. This decline is not limited to disadvantaged demographics, as reading scores among students from affluent families have also suffered significant drops. Concurrently, technical performance in STEM subjects has deteriorated: average science scores fell from 506 in 2009 to 486, while mathematics scores declined sharply from 502 to 469.
The Impact of Exceeding Five Hours of Screen Time and AI Chatbot Usage
The global study uncovered critical insights regarding digital habits and academic output. Nearly half of the surveyed students regularly utilize artificial intelligence chatbots for studying. However, students who relied on AI tools to draft essays, summarize reading material, or conduct research scored an average of 20 points lower in science—representing an educational deficit equivalent to roughly a full year of schooling. While the OECD does not explicitly advocate for total smartphone bans in schools, classroom distractions from digital devices were directly linked to lower science achievement in 59 out of 82 educational systems. More than one in four students reported that digital gadgets in classrooms disrupted their peers. On average, students across OECD nations spend about 3.4 hours per weekday on digital devices purely for entertainment, in addition to roughly three hours dedicated to study. According to experts, while moderate digital tool usage can aid learning, total daily screen exposure exceeding five hours leads to a measurable collapse in student academic performance.
