While residents navigate unlit neighborhoods and dark intersections every night, nearly two thousand newly purchased streetlights remain locked away inside the Sohna Municipal Council’s storeroom, gathering dust instead of illuminating the city. The glaring administrative apathy has triggered widespread public outrage, raising serious questions about the operational efficiency and accountability of local civic authorities. Citizens and local taxpayers allege that equipment purchased using hard-earned public funds is rotting in storage due to bureaucratic delays and utter negligence by municipal officials, exposing urban areas to heightened safety risks.

Bureaucratic Red Tape: Purchase Approved, But Installation Stalled

The controversy stems from a municipal board meeting held several months ago, during which a formal proposal to procure five thousand streetlights was unanimously passed. Following endorsement and approval from the District Municipal Commissioner (DMC) in Gurugram, council officials promptly purchased a massive consignment of lights through authorized agencies. However, instead of deploying the hardware across dark municipal wards, authorities failed to secure timely operational clearances from the Urban Local Bodies Department, leaving thousands of lighting units stranded in boxes while public infrastructure languishes.

Public Safety Risks and Rising Discontent Among Residents

The prolonged delay in installing the streetlights has plunged major residential sectors, commercial zones, and arterial intersections into total darkness once night falls. Local residents and community leaders point out that unlit streets significantly elevate the risk of nighttime accidents, vehicular hazards, and potential criminal incidents or thefts. Frustrated by the civic body's inaction, citizens are demanding immediate intervention from district administrators to fast-track approvals, clear bureaucratic hurdles, and ensure that the locked streetlights are installed across Sohna without further delay.
