The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has stated that there is no decision yet to apply the satellite toll collection policies across the country starting May 1. This clarification has come after media reports claiming the satellite based toll system would be introduced by May 1, 2025 replacing existing Fastag based toll collection systems.

The ministry said in a statement that “ANPR- based FASTag Barrier-Free Tolling System” for enabling free flow of traffic will be operational at select toll plazas that will allow smooth unrestricted movement of vehicles at toll plazas which will minimize travel time.

As per the statement the proposed system whose advance termed will be integraded to ANPR, will identify vehicles by number plate for reading and the existing systems using ‘FASTag’ by Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) will assist in toll collection.

Performance ANPR cameras alongside Fastag readers will be used to identify vehicles hence charging them without the need to halt at toll plaza barriers. E-notices will in case of infringement of the policies be issued to the striking parties without payment of fines it will lead to the suspension of the Fastag or incurring other penalties associated with the vehicle.
