In a major push to revive the state’s traditional textile sector, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to provide significant relief to powerloom weavers across Uttar Pradesh. Emphasizing that weavers are a "strong pillar" of the state's economy, the CM has ordered the Power Corporation and the Handloom Department to jointly formulate a transparent and practical policy to reduce their mounting electricity costs.

Action Plan for Lower Power Tariffs and Arrears Relief

During a high-level review meeting, CM Yogi stressed that the income and dignity of the weaving community are top priorities for his government. He directed the authorities to ensure that electricity bills do not become a burden on production. The state is currently working on an integrated action plan that includes:

Rationalization of Tariffs: Adjusting power rates to keep the industry competitive.

Modernization Grants: Providing financial aid for upgrading to energy-efficient machinery.

Solar Transition: A massive push toward solar-powered looms to eliminate dependency on the conventional grid.

Focus on Cluster-Based Production and Modern Technology

The Chief Minister highlighted that rising raw material costs and limited market access are key challenges for the 5.5 lakh weavers in the state. To counter this, he suggested organizing weavers into registered units within specific clusters. These clusters will be linked with modern technology and digital branding platforms like e-commerce to connect local artisans directly with global consumers.

Solar Energy: A Permanent Solution for Power Woes

Under the 'Chief Minister Weaver Solar Energy Scheme', the UP government is already offering up to 50% to 75% subsidies for installing solar plants. CM Yogi reiterated that transitioning to solar energy is the only long-term solution to provide "free-from-tension" electricity to powerloom units. This shift is expected to significantly increase the net profit of weavers by cutting down their primary operational expense—power.

Strengthening the 'Atal Bihari Vajpayee Powerloom Scheme'

The government is also committed to strengthening existing welfare measures like the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Powerloom Weavers Flat Rate Electricity Scheme. With a massive budgetary allocation of over ₹4,400 crore for the 2026-27 financial year, the administration aims to ensure that no weaver faces disconnection due to pending dues while the new relief framework is being implemented.
