Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RapidX Corridor: Completion of Tunnel Construction by NCRTC
The Delhi Transport Corporation has nearly completed the tunnel construction for the RapidX Corridor. This corridor spans 82 kilometers from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Meerut, with only 14 kilometers of it being at ground level. The remaining stretch involves the construction of tunnels for track laying and station development. These 14 kilometers, split equally on both sides, are spread across Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut. While most tunnels are ready, a 3-kilometer stretch between Anand Vihar and Vaishali is currently under construction.
Connecting Key Stations and Progress Update
Within the 14-kilometer ground-level section, 7 kilometers host three stations in Meerut: Meerut Central, Bhainsali, and Shatabdi Nagar. The expansion between New Ashok Nagar and Anand Vihar covers 4 kilometers, while the extension from Anand Vihar to Vaishali spans 3 kilometers. All of these sections are linked by tunnels.
The NCRTC officer mentioned in a Times of India report that work has been completed from Vaishali to Anand Vihar, leaving just one side to be finished. The officer believes that the remaining tunnel work will be concluded within a week. They stated, “It shouldn’t take more time than this. Once the tunnels are ready, we’ll lay down the tracks.”
Reason for Tunnel Construction
Tunnels are being built to mitigate the noise caused by trains traveling at approximately 90 kilometers per hour in the ground-level sections. Both sides of these sections will have 2 tunnels each. For every 250 meters of the tunnel, cross-passages are being integrated using Australian techniques. During emergencies, passengers can utilize these passages to reach the other tunnel. Around 12 such cross-passages have been constructed towards Delhi’s end of the corridor.
Recent Achievements and Financial Aspects
In April of this year, the Transport Corporation completed the construction of two tunnels between Gandhi Bagh and Begumpul in Meerut. The tunnel work in Delhi was finalized in June.
The 82-kilometer-long RapidX Corridor from Sarai Kale Khan to Meerut is a massive project estimated to cost 30,724 crore rupees. The Uttar Pradesh government’s contribution to this project is 6,500 crore rupees. This route will include eight stations in Ghaziabad: Sahibabad, New Bus Adda, Guldar, Duhai, Muradnagar, Modinagar (South), and Modinagar (North).
