The Delhi Police on Friday informed a local court that it has registered an FIR against former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and others in connection with allegations of misusing public money for putting up hoardings across the capital in 2019.
The police's submission was made in a compliance report before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Neha Mittal, following the court’s directive issued on March 11. The order came in response to a complaint alleging a violation of the Prevention of Defacement of Property Act.
The complaint, originally filed in 2019, accused Kejriwal, then Matiala MLA Gulab Singh, and former Dwarka A ward councillor Nitika Sharma of deliberately using public funds to install large-sized hoardings in various parts of Delhi, particularly in the Dwarka area.
The court had earlier ordered the police to register an FIR based on the allegations. On Friday, police sought more time to investigate the matter, after which the court scheduled the next hearing for April 18.
The case highlights concerns regarding the alleged misuse of government resources for political advertising. The FIR could bring further legal scrutiny for Kejriwal and the other involved parties, depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
