Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology will be implemented on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, making it one of the first expressways in India to integrate such systems. Once the system is tested successfully, it will be installed across the country in order to automate the process of vehicle passage through toll plazas.

What Is The Process Of ANPR Working?

ANPR captures vehicle number plates using specialized cameras placed at the entrance and exit of the expressway, which scan number plates. Payment is done automatically through a fastag that is linked to the vehicle registration number, and the fee is paid when the vehicle passes through the gates without stopping or through gates that allows vehicles to slow down.

Countrywide Upgrade Unveiled

Following the successful pilot project performed on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has made the decision to implement ANPR on all expressways and national highways across the country. This step is expected to make a significant impact on lowering the long waiting times at toll booths while enabling free and speedy movement.

CHANGES FROM GPS TO ANPR

Toll collection was initially planned through GPS, but due to security and reliability issues raised by a panel of experts, it was considered for cancellation. The ministry has claimed that GP technologies are set to not be used for collecting the fees; instead the more dependable method of ANPR system will be used.

Advantages of Implementing ANPR

The use of ANPR technology will:

- Reduce the restriction of vehicles and traffic slowing at toll booths.
- Create an easier and quicker way for vehicles to travel over the highways.
- Automated payments of tolls, will save time for all commuters.

The effective implementation of ANPR on the Delhi–Meerut Expressway opens a new benchmark of prospects for enhanced travel efficiency and streamlined toll collection across the country.
