Rakesh Rathore, the Congress MP from Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, spent 49 days in jail. He was released from Sitapur jail on Wednesday at 8 am, and drove home in his Fortuner. When he arrived home and met his wife and family members, tears rolled down his face.

What events led to this situation?

On January 15 Rakesh Rathore was accused of sexual harassment and rape by a female leader. The women claimed that, for four years the MP had been sexually using her under the pretense of marrying her and aiding in her political career. When she brought up the topic of a potential marriage, he threatened to kill her.

After the medical examination, the police filed against the MP on January 17 for rape and several other felonies, post which the victim’s testimony was taken by a magistrate.

What led to his arrest?

Once the FIR was filed, the MP went into hiding. He was captured on January 30 whilst trying to give the media an interview from his house. He was taken to prison to serve 14 days of judicial detention following a court appearance.

What caused the bail delay?

On March 20, Congress MP Rakesh Rathore was incarcerated for 49 days in Sitapur, and was released on bail after March 18.

He was gradually set free, but the police seemed to increase the MP’s charges after the MP’s voice sample report came. as expected, he spent Holi in jail. He had to wait until he was granted bail from the CJM court, which was finally given on March 20.

What are his statements?

He went on to explain that the judicial process has it’s problems, and everyone will know the truth as long as they stand by him and trust the process all so, they are eager to hear.

This is not justice in placing serious sections against known face such as him in politics.” While the other face remained calm stating “We trust they will give us justice” casting the doubts away.

Path to Which Rakesh wanted to go:

The BJP ticket was his opening doors, granting him the chance to become and MLA in 2017.

He was overheard bashing the government in a leaked audio clip from 2021.

He got no opportunity in 2022 after joining SP from BJP.

Eventually, he won the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, beating the BJP's four time MP Rajesh Verma by 90,000 votes after joining Congress.
