Currently, Team India led by Rohit Sharma is one of the four teams that have reached the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and are also one of the favorites to lift the trophy.
Congress leader Shama Mohammad has put herself in a scuffle after her recent bold statement regarding the the Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma. In her statement, she was quoted as calling him “fat”, further claiming that him being overweight affects his performance. Not only this, Congress leader Shama Mohammad has called Rohit Sharma's captaincy the 'worst' in the history of the Indian cricket team. Along with this, she has also adviced him to get his weight under control. Shama Mohammad recently stated, “Rohit is fat as a player, is India’s most dissapointing captain, and needs to lose some weight.”
In response, there was outrage on social media as well as other social platforms disrupting general harmony.
The post made by Shama Mohammad is facing heavy backlash from online users. Shama, in her defense stated that her post had been taken out of context. However, by then it was too late and her screenshots had gone viral. Following this, BJP leader Radhika Khera has also publicly condemned Mohommad’s remarks in support of Congress stating that her previous party has spent decades trying to attack sportsmen.

Radhika Khera ridiculed Jairam Ramesh as she attended an event, asking him to concentrate on the Congress party's diminishing relevance, credibility, and electoral prospects rather than attacking a cricketer who has served the country admirably. She said, "Khera further added, For God's sake, Congress should first manage its own sinking dynasty and then without addressing India's pride".
Shama Mohammad provided context
Shama clarified her remarks regarding Mohamamd Rohit Scharma, arguing that her criticism was not aiming towards any body shaming, appearance, but simply a commentary in regards to an athlete's fitness. In defending herself, she stated, ‘It is not body shaming at all. Every single athlete should aim on trying to maintain a peak physical condition. Moreover, I felt that he (Rohit Sharma) was certainly overweight so I kind of remark about that on my Twitter acct.’
Bhandari Pradeep also attacked the party for the Congress.
Pradeep Bhandari, who is also a prominent member of the BJP, said, The Captain of the Indian team did well for the country, and he defeated New Zeland.... More over this also questions on the patriotism of the congress party. Congress Party tries to convey a message that any so called patriot who does sometihng good for the country will meet with a Congress opposition.
Now, the people of India know that any person who aids and loves the country will be opposed by the Congress party, while any anti-India sentiment will be supported by them.
