Who is Goddess Chhinnamasta?
Goddess Chhinnamasta is the sixth goddess from a set of ten Mahavidyas and is a famous form under Kali Kula also known as the cult of Mother Kalis. She is the one who is headless and holds a severed head, symbolizing the sacrifices of one’s ego class and the supreme destruction of all desires which translates to achieving everything.
Goddess Chhinnamasta is shown holding her own bloody head from which a fountain of crimson pours, nourishing her two attendants.
Chhinnamasta is also associated with a form of lord shiva without a head, Kabandha Shiva, who signifies the destruction of the cosmos.
Tantrics, Aghori and Yogis are the people who usually worship her, but any person can perform her puja with the aim of gaining strength or guidance for spiritual protection.
To worship her, one needs to be disciplined and free from dirt.
Tantra Shastra mentions her as a diety adored by sages like Parshuram and Guru Gorakhnath.
Her existence is acknowledged in Shakti, Buddhism, Jainism as well as the Nath traditions.
Her control over dualities is shown in the emblems of her attendants - Dahana and Varnini who represent Rajas and Tamas.
Sadhaka are informed towards Shiva Bhava which is the extinction of individual self in consciousness with divinity.
Connections to Narasimha and Vajra Vairochani
She is thought to possess some sort of universal relationship with lord Narasimha, another fierce form of divinity.
She is also worshipped as Vajra Vairochani in Tantric practices because of former associations with worshipped like Hiranyakashyap and Vairochana.
Significance of Chhinnamasta Jayanti
The day encourages practitioners to let go of anathar and restrains, vioelently attached to lower self.
This event is not only a festive occassion but also a celebration of chikitsa and enlightenment.
