As India celebrates B R Ambedkar birth anniversarys, the BJP faces backlash from a recent controversial incident in Rajasthan. This is all about the senior BJP leader Gyan Dev Ahuja who accompanied by a Dalit Congress leader Tikaram Jully performed the “purification” ceremony aat the Ram Temple in Alwar.
Ahuja faced backlash after a video of him purifying the temple using Ganga water went viral. People from all side of the debate reignited the discussion about caste discrimination and untouchability. Ahuja claimed that his actions were justified, “purifying” the location from “dirty individuals” drew condemnation from all sides.
Oposition and Dalit leaders lambasted Ahuja for using discriminatory tactics to “cleanse” the temple. The former Dalit Leader of the Opposition in the Rajasthan Assembly, Tikaram Jully, described the act as vindictive for targeting a religious ritual and denigrating people of particular caste. His response further claimed the BJP true attitude regardings Dalits.
Congress and Dalit organizations mobilized for demonstrations throughout the state setting fire to effigies in demand for immediate change. This inquiry compelled the BJP took Ahuja off of his Position and suspended him alongside a show cause notice. A notice which cited breaching the part’s policies contravening caste discrimination the party also pointed that the first stone of the Ram temple in Ayodhya was laid by Kameshwar Choupal, a Dalit.
Ahuja’s Controversial Past and BJP’s Contradictory Stance
Discipline as such represents the newest evolution of BJP’s approach towards Ahuja, who has earlier invited trouble with intemperate comments. Hindutva hardliner RSS loyalist Ahuja is known for a lot of cunning endorsement such as:
Support of lynch mobs for alleged cow smuggling
Comminal exploitation in some parts of Mewat
Assertion jawaharlal Nehru was a beef eater
Accusation of JNU students of lewd activities.
The conduct was certainly questionable but the BJP did not seem to apply any disciplinary action which do suggest some form of hypocrisy endorse communal stroking heading for deeper domination but act with operational velocity where Caste dynamics Mopola and sharpen scythes towards Dalit voters support tends to halt and go into overdrive.
Political Appeasement and Persistent Demonstrations:
Protesters are still active throughout Rajasthan particularly in Jaipur and Alwar even after Ahuja’s suspension. Groups representing Dalits have rallied and raised the flags symbolic to the blue color and have relocated the knee to the glaring sun in counter clockwise direction pulling toward themselves to ignite and expand the contention requesting for an apology and a law suit put Writs against Ahuja.
Rahul Gandhi brought it forth at Congress during the session ‘Battleground’ in Ahmedabad accusing BJP as substantiate evidence of being anti Dalit while arguing there as Def÷headed BISO(Dalits/o) propagating gives contradictionally non-sensical statements).
BJP's Challenge: Retaining Hindutva While Expanding Dalit Outreach
The event has once again surfaced worries within BJP about its support among Dalits, especially in Rajasthan where it lost three out of four SC constituencies in the last Lok Sabha elections. The party is desperate to contain the fallout with Panchayat and municipal election around the corner.
This controversy highlights the fault lines within BJP’s social base -between the core supporters who are Hindutva followers and the sections more vulnerable such as Dalits. In the absence of the sustained credibility, the party’s response can manage the short term optics, but without reliable implementation of the anti discrimination measures, credibility will be lost.
