Russian President Vladimir Putin recently stated that he hasn't closed the door on meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but he questions if such a meeting would accomplish anything. He believes that for talks to be meaningful, the political situation in Kyiv would need to be addressed.
Putin suggested that the ongoing conflict could find a political resolution if Ukraine and its Western allies took a more pragmatic view. He warned that if a political solution isn't found, Russia will continue its military actions to achieve its goals.
According to Putin, Russia's primary objective isn't to take over land but to protect the cultural and linguistic rights of people in the region. "We are not fighting for land," he stated, adding, “We are fighting for people’s rights — to speak their language and practise their culture.”
He also brought up Russia's long-standing security concerns, particularly regarding Ukraine's potential membership in NATO, which he views as a direct threat.Putin clarified that while Russia opposes NATO's expansion, it has not taken issue with Ukraine's economic aspirations, such as building closer ties with the European Union.
These remarks from the Russian leader came on the heels of comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, who expressed his disappointment with Putin. Trump mentioned that his administration is working on measures to lessen the human impact of the war. "I am very disappointed in President Putin, I can say that," Trump commented.
