In a recent development from Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, the Indian Army has commenced an inquiry following allegations by Dr. Liaqat Ali, an assistant professor at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), of being assaulted by army personnel during a routine vehicle check. The incident has garnered significant attention, prompting responses from political figures and the public alike.

Incident Overview

Dr. Liaqat Ali reported that on the night of April 17, while returning from a pre-wedding ceremony with his relatives near Laam village in Nowshera, their vehicles were stopped by army personnel for inspection. Despite presenting valid identification, including IDs of family members serving in the armed forces, Dr. Ali alleges that he was assaulted without provocation, resulting in head injuries that required medical attention.

Army's Response

The Indian Army acknowledged the incident, stating that they had intelligence regarding potential terrorist movement in the area, which necessitated the vehicle checks. According to their preliminary findings, a scuffle ensued when an individual allegedly attempted to snatch a weapon from a soldier. The Army has assured a thorough investigation and emphasized that any personnel found guilty of misconduct will face strict action as per the law.

Legal Proceedings

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under Sections 126(2) and 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against unidentified army personnel. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.

Public and Political Reactions

The incident has elicited strong reactions from various quarters. Mehbooba Mufti, former Chief Minister and PDP president, condemned the alleged assault, stating that such actions tarnish the reputation of a respected institution. She urged the Army to take immediate and strict action against those responsible.
