Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Tragedy strikes in Amritsar Division of Punjab as at least 14 people lose their lives due to the consumption of lethal liquor. Among the deceased, most of them were employed as daily wage laborers at the nearby brick kilns. The incident occurred in Majitha and surrounding areas where people were said to have consumed the confined liquor.
As per authorities, the death toll is expected to rise as many patients still remain critical exhibiting grave symptoms.
Spurious Alcohol Affects Multiple Villages
Patients from nearby villages like Bhullar, Tangra, and Sandha have also been reported. After consuming the illicit alcohol, many have started to face grave situations like constant vomiting and other physical issues. Moreover, 10 to 15 patients with serious conditions have been lifted to the government hospital in Amritsar.
The fatalities were confirmed by Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sahni while the Senior Superintendent of Police Maninder Singh attended to the area to get a firsthand look of the set situation.
Timely Police Action and Subsequent Arrests
SSP Maninder Singh states that police got information at 9 PM about deaths due to the consumption of spurious liquor. In a timely response by the police, four suspects were rounded up. The rest of the suspects are being tracked. One of the main accused, Parbjit Singh was arrested which led the inquiries to other suspects like Sahab Singh who is said to be a major supplier.
Punjab government has issued an order for those responsible for the illegal business of liquor to be dealt with in a harsh legal manner.
Government Officials Survey the Situation
Majitha's MLA and other senior officials met impacted families and surveyed the damages. The administration has started the démarches for the complete investigation on the origin and trafficking network of the toxic liquor.
After all, this gruesome incident is part of the bigger problem about illegal liquor problem in the rural areas of Punjab which has sparked public outcry and demands stricter laws.
